Tuskaloosa, Ala., July 2 A colored man named Lee Patton was drowned in the Warrior river near this city this evening while bathing. Visitation will be at 10:00 a.m. Wednesday, March 1st at Donald Ray Beckham, age 69 of Moundville, AL. His recovery is possible, but not probable. In 1847 he was a candidate for the representative branch of the legislature, and conducted the canvass, though very young, with much tact and ability, and with entire satisfaction to his own party, and won for himself an enviable reputation as a public speaker. As he was throwing a switch his foot was caught in a frog, when a backing train knocked him down and crushed him to death before he could be extricated. Having been prepared in the primary schools, he entered the freshman class in the University of Alabama in 1838, where he graduated in 1841, with the highest distinction a result reflecting credit alike upon the sagacity and kindness of the benefactor and the talents and energy of the beneficiary.
